About
Manuel Mathieu is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice traverses painting, ceramics and installation, while extending to video, poetry and the evocative world of perfumery. His work explores themes of historical violence and erasure, as well as cultural perspectives on physicality, nature and spiritual heritage.
Born and raised in Haiti, Mathieu emigrated to Montreal at the age of 19, a seminal experience that shapes his fluid approach to history, memory and artistic expression. Drawing on a variety of traditions and influences, he seeks meaning through a spiritual and asemic modality of apparition, allowing his work to exist beyond rigid interpretations.
Mathieu's practice blends his Haitian heritage with his formal art training, which culminated in an MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London. His work has been shown in major institutions in North America, Europe and Asia, including recent solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA), the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Power Plant in Toronto, the De La Warr Pavilion in the UK, the Longlati Foundation in Shanghai, and the K11 Foundations in Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenyang. His works are included in public and private collections in the United States, Canada, France, China, Israel and Lebanon, testifying to the international scope of his practice. Through these diverse presentations, Mathieu continues to deepen dialogues around postcolonial narratives, resilience and the invisible forces that shape collective and personal histories.
